Thomas Spence died from unspecified causes on 4th November,  1914, while a prisoner of war and it is likely that he was captured and perhaps wounded during the Battle of Mons on 23rd August, 1914 when the 4th Middlesex battalion of 8 Brigade3rd Division were heavily involved in the fighting. The St Symphorien Military Cemetery is situated just to the east of Mons.
